The UAE, dune to skyline.
Which desert safari actually leaves the city behind. Whether level 148 is worth the upgrade. What an hour on a Marina yacht really costs. Every tour in the Emirates, reviewed.
Dubai’s icons, Abu Dhabi’s marble, and the dunes in between.
The desert night everyone books first, the 124th floor, the Grand Mosque an hour down the E11, the gold souk and the abra across the Creek. These are the days most Emirates trips get planned around.
Desert safaris out of Dubai: pick your dunes.
Every desert safari →
Red sand at Lahbab or the softer tracks at Al Awir, dune bashing before the light goes, then a camp with camels, henna and a grill. These three carry the most travellers; the full list splits the rest by how much desert you actually want.

Dune bashing, camp dinner, back by ten
Collected around four, an hour of 4x4 over the red dunes, sandboards while the light turns orange, then a camp with camels, henna and a buffet under the lanterns.
Dubai is a city you book, not a city you wander.
Nothing here is a five-minute walk from anything else. The observation deck, the marina berth, the desert camp and the souk are four separate half-days with a car in between — and the good slots go early.
The Emirates on any budget, from ticket to charter.
Three bands, and what a day in each actually buys. A good day out here starts at about the price of the taxi in from the airport.
Entry tickets, camel rides, the abra across the Creek and the shared desert evenings that fill every hotel lobby.
The full days: Abu Dhabi and the Grand Mosque, a morning on the dunes, marina yachts, dinner cruises with the buffet included.
The bookings the Emirates runs on.

Abu Dhabi is an hour away and a different country.
The capital kept the marble, the museums and the motorsport. Most people take it as one long day out of Dubai; whoever stays the night gets the corniche at dusk and a mosque without a queue.
The Gulf is the other half of the Emirates.
Warm water all year, a coastline of marinas and a fleet that will take you out for an hour or a whole afternoon. Yachts off Dubai Marina, jet skis under Burj Al Arab, a dhow down the Creek once the towers light up.

In a UAE summer, the whole country moves indoors.
From June to September the afternoon is not negotiable: past forty by noon and humid all along the coast. Everything worth doing is air-conditioned — the aquarium tunnels, the Louvre’s perforated dome, the observation decks, the indoor ski slope, the waterparks that stay open late. Keep the desert for October.
Three things the Emirates built that nowhere else has.
Beach clubs and shopping malls turn up anywhere warm. A half-mile tower, an island dredged into the shape of a palm and a mosque of 82 domes belong to this coast alone.

The Burj Khalifa
Tallest building on earth since 2010 and nothing since has come close: 828 metres, 163 floors, a lift that reaches level 124 in about a minute. Levels 124 and 125 are the standard ticket; 148 adds an outdoor terrace and a far shorter queue. The hour either side of sunset costs more and goes first.

The Palm Jumeirah
Sixteen fronds and an eleven-kilometre breakwater were pulled out of the seabed and then built on. The shape only reads from above — from The View observatory at the top of the trunk, from a helicopter out of Atlantis, or from a speedboat running the outer crescent.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Abu Dhabi’s great mosque holds forty thousand people under 82 domes, over the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world. Entry costs nothing and visitors are welcome outside prayer times; the dress code is strict and enforced at the gate, and the marble is at its best in the last hour of light.

Almost everything here can be arranged from the hotel lobby the night before. These cannot: they run on timed tickets, a season that shuts in spring, and mornings that only work in winter.
- 01Burj Khalifa Levels 124 & 125 Entry Ticket + OptionsTimed entry, and the hour either side of sunset carries a premium and sells out first — often a week ahead.
- 02Global Village Entry Ticket with Hotel TransfersOpen from October to April and closed the rest of the year. Inside the season, weekend evenings are the busiest hours it has.
- 03Miracle Garden Entry Ticket with Hotel TransferA winter garden. It shuts through the hottest months and reopens in the autumn, so the season decides the day, not your diary.
- 04Luxury Hot Air Balloon, Land Rover Defender & Michelin BreakfastSunrise departures only, and the desert flying season runs roughly September to May. Weather grounds more of these than anything else on the site.
